City of Moncton and Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Reach Five-Year Agreement 2025-01-21

Moncton City Council ratified a five-year collective agreement between the City of Moncton and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1290 during its regular public meeting on Monday, Jan. 20. The ATU represents 112 Codiac Transpo employees, including bus operators, mechanics, and service personnel.

The previous agreement expired Dec. 31, 2024.

“Codiac Transpo management and ATU Local 1290 have built an excellent working relationship over the years and this contributed greatly to the success of this round of collective bargaining,” says Laura Armes, director, human resources at the City of Moncton. “We had a very collaborative round of negotiations, with both parties finding creative ways to address one another’s priorities.”

The new collective agreement provides a 16.5 per cent pay increase over five years. ATU employees will also be entitled to four weeks of vacation beginning in their fifth year of service instead of their tenth and will see enhancements to their benefit plan, including the addition of massage therapy and improvements to mental health coverage. A new provision for a mechanic apprenticeship program was added and both parties agreed to update the language in the agreement to be gender-neutral in support of the City’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action Plan.

“Our members worked hard for this contract, and we believe it strikes the right balance between meeting their needs and maintaining the high standard of service that the residents of Moncton deserve,” says Steve Trites, president/business agent for ATU Local 1290.

The new agreement is effective from Jan. 1, 2025 to Dec. 31, 2029.
