Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold appointed to Senate of Canada 2025-03-07

Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold has been appointed to the Senate of Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Arnold as one of five new senators in a news release sent earlier today.
“It is an immense honour to be appointed to the Senate of Canada and I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to serve Canadians at a national level,” Arnold says. “This is not goodbye – this is simply a new chapter in my service to this wonderful community and to Canada. I would like to thank the people of Moncton for their trust, their energy, and their passion for this city. It has been a privilege to serve as your Mayor.”
As a result of her appointment, Arnold has resigned as Mayor, effective immediately, and Deputy Mayor Paulette Thériault will assume the role of Acting Mayor.
“On behalf of the City of Moncton, I would like to extend congratulations to Dawn Arnold on her appointment to the Senate. This is a well-deserved honour and we know she will serve New Brunswickers and Canadians as well as she served our community,” says City of Moncton CAO Serge Doucet. “We will miss her leadership, but the City of Moncton will continue to be capably guided by our deputy mayor and Council.”
Arnold was first elected to Moncton City Council as a councillor-at-large in 2012. She has served as the City’s mayor since 2016. The current Council mandate ends in May 2026.
