FAQ
What are common causes of water leaks?
Common causes of water leaks are leaking faucets, malfunctioning toilets, leaking tabs, or ruptured pipes. A leaking toilet alone can cost residents in Moncton up to $60/day when a replacement flapper costs only $20.
Can I have my water meter tested if I believe it is faulty?
Water meters either record consumption accurately or start under-registering with age (not over-registering), however if you would like to have your meter tested for accuracy, you can request this test by phoning our Dispatch line 24/7 at 506-859-2643. Should the testing prove that the meter is not over-registering, it is your responsibility to pay for the test.
How can I prevent a water leak?
Common causes of water leaks are leaking faucets, malfunctioning toilets, leaking tabs, or ruptured pipes. A leaking toilet alone can cost residents in Moncton up to $60/day when a replacement flapper costs only $20.
In order to prevent leaks, residents should familiarize themselves with the common causes. Residents should also sign-up for an online account at myaccount.moncton.ca and set their water consumption threshold to receive leak alerts. To sign up for leak alerts, follow these steps:
- Login to your account
- Select the "Profile" tab
- Select "Notifications"
- Identify your consumption threshold
- Select "Email" to receive your alerts via email
It is recommended that residents use 1 cubic meter (1000 liters) as their threshold (the minimum amount). In the event that consumption surpasses this amount, residents will receive an alert the following day instead of receiving an unexpected water bill at the end of the quarterly billing cycle.
To determine your threshold, visit the "meter data" tab on your online account at myaccount.moncton.ca and view your consumption to identify the threshold to receive high consumption alerts.
How do I know if it is my responsibility or the City's responsibility?
Homeowners are responsible for their water consumption, regardless of if their consumption is intentional or the result of a leak.
Private homeowners are responsible for the infrastructure within their property line. The City is responsible for all infrastructure in the City Right-of-Way (ROW) up to the property line.
When do I call the City for a water leak?
If you see a sudden appearance of water in front of your residence, you should report it to the City by phoning the Dispatch line 24/7 at 506-859-2643.
Are water leaks always visible?
Toilet leaks which are one of the most common types of leaks and most costly are not visible and can also be silent. A person could visually see water always running inside the toilet bowl and sometimes hear water running but it will not cause water damage on the floor.
What does not qualify for the water leak relief program?
Properties that do not qualify include those properties used for industrial, commercial, institutional or multi-residential purposes. Vacant properties or properties left unattended/unoccupied when the leak occurred are also ineligible.
Eligibility for the water leak relief program are outlined in the City's Water Leak Adjustment Policy.
How do I open or close a water and wastewater account with the City?
The lawyer representing you in the purchase or sale of the home will take care of closing or opening the Water and Wastewater account. There is no need to contact the City of Moncton for this request.
Why am I getting a daily "high consumption" emails?
You are receiving these emails because you are subscribed to an account on myaccount.moncton.ca and have signed up for leak alert notifications. These emails are being sent to you too often for one of the following reasons:
- You have a water leak and these alerts are advising you that there is an abnormal consumption of water
- Your daily consumption is higher than the threshold to send you a notification. If this is the case, use the meter data tab in your profile to identify a more accurate threshold for these alerts.
