Local Organizing Committee to Host World Juniors Community Festival 2022-12-08
The City of Moncton is pleased to announce that a community festival will be held during the 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship (Dec. 26 to Jan. 5). The community festival is being coordinated by Team Moncton, a local organizing committee composed of local leaders, tasked with putting together the community program in Moncton.
Downtown Place (150 Canada St.) has been designated the main grounds of the festival. For the occasion, this prime community space will be decked out in tournament colours and animated with free and accessible activities. Event highlights include the exciting New Year’s Eve Party with exciting live entertainment, and fireworks. Also as part of festivities, the Moncton Market will host a series featuring local fare and regional talent.
Ring in the New Year!
Come celebrate New Year’s Eve at Downtown Place where The Mellotones will headline the biggest FREE party in town! The Dec. 31st festivities will offer live music, a live viewing of the Canada vs. Sweden game taking place in Halifax, a fireworks display and a ball drop to ring in 2023!
Celebrate with food and friends at the Market!
The Moncton Market series will see local charities host pancake breakfasts (morning sessions) and lunches featuring popular Maritime dishes such as lobster rolls (afternoon sessions) – all complemented by live regional entertainment. Proceeds from each session will go to the charity that has organized it.
What else can people expect to find at the Community Festival?
Festival activities at Downtown Place will be free and open to the public. Throughout the festival, everyone is invited to:
- enjoy outdoor concerts featuring regional talent before and after games
- attend live viewing parties of Halifax games on large outdoor screens (fans won’t want to miss the Semi Finals and Finals viewing parties on Jan. 4 and 5)
- skate on the Ian Fowler Oval rink while enjoying live music or a live hockey game on the outdoor screens
- delight their tastebuds by visiting one of the food vendors on site; and more
“We want this high-profile international event to be a memorable experience for residents and visitors alike, said Bill Whalen, co-chair of Team Moncton. “Our objective is to ensure that anyone can take in free, accessible and fun activities even if unable to see a game. The community energy delivered directly from our downtown will be phenomenal! We want people to remember Moncton.”
