Moncton Fire Department Emphasizes Smoke Alarm Safety during Fire Prevention Week 2024-09-26

The Moncton Fire Department, in collaboration with the Office of the Fire Marshal, is gearing up for Fire Prevention Week, taking place from Oct. 6 to 12. This year's campaign, " Smoke alarms: Make them work for you," underscores the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

Smoke alarms play a critical role in home safety, providing early warnings that can save lives in the event of a fire. “We know that smoke alarms are the first line of defense in a home fire,” says the Moncton Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Charles LeBlanc. “Ensuring they are properly installed and maintained is essential to keeping your family safe.”

The Moncton Fire Department shares vital smoke alarm tips to keep your home safe:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
  • For maximum protection, use interconnected smoke alarms. When one sounds, they all sound, providing an early warning across the entire house.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button to ensure they function properly.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years, or sooner if they malfunction. Regularly check the manufacture date to stay on track.
  • Prepare and practice a fire escape plan so everyone knows what to do when the alarm goes off.

Fire Prevention Week serves as an annual reminder to educate residents on fire prevention and safety. To raise awareness about fire safety, the Moncton Fire Department will host its annual Open House at the Hildegard Fire Station (99 Hildegard Dr.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. Attendees can explore fire trucks and rescue vehicles, witness a Jaws of Life demonstration, and enjoy a delicious fundraiser barbecue.
