Climate Change Adaptation
The City of Moncton is proactive in reducing the risks to the community posed by climate change.
Climate change is a growing concern for many municipalities, including Moncton.
In 2011 the Cities of Moncton and Dieppe, as well as the Town of Riverview collaborated to identify and reduce the risks posed by climate change through a cost-shared federal program. This resulted in a study on climate change adaptation measures for the Greater Moncton Area in 2011. Based on findings of the 2011 study, we prepared a Climate Change Adaptation and Flood Management Strategy in 2013.
Since then, climate change has progressed, and new information and understanding of the issue has emerged. We are now updating the 2013 Strategy with the help of funding from the Environment Trust Fund of the Government of New Brunswick. The updated Climate Adaptation Plan will incorporate the latest information on climate projections, hazards, vulnerability and risks to people, livelihoods and infrastructure. It will include updated flood maps, as well as a set of adaption actions to be taken in the short-, medium- and long-term to help Moncton adapt to the challenges posed by ongoing global heating.
