Documents required when applying for a taxi licence
All fees listed are current as of Jan. 1, 2023. External fees may have changed without notice.
All documents must be included with your application.
- Driver’s Licence – Class 1, 2. or 4 (New Brunswick).
- Driver’s Abstract – order through Service New Brunswick, must be dated within 30 days of your application. (Fee: $20+HST)
- Province of New Brunswick Language Certificate – applicants must have a certificate of oral proficiency with a rating of at least Basic Plus (1+) in either English OR French; new applicants will have one year to get this certificate. Request a language proficiency evaluation through the Government of New Brunswick. (Fee: $60+HST)
- National Standards Certification for Taxicab and Limousine Driver – Certification OR proof of registration (if a first-time applicant). Sign up for training at: Taxicab and Limousine Driver Certification (skillbuilder.co) (Fee: $260 to $350)
- Criminal Record Check – request in-person from the RCMP (520 Main St.); the document must be signed and include a Vulnerable Sector check, dated within 30 days of your application, and must be the original document, no copies accepted. (Fee: $55)
- HST registration number – required if you are a self-employed taxi operator as defined by the Canada Revenue Agency; otherwise, you must provide proof that you are not a self-employed taxi operator. Apply for a HST number through the Government of Canada. (No cost)
